Mohs micrographic surgery on the ear demands precise tissue-sparing excision and skilled reconstruction. The ear’s complex three-dimensional cartilage architecture and visible position make it one of the most challenging sites for skin cancer surgery, where both cure rate and cosmetic outcome matter.

Miss Rakhee Nayar is dual-trained in Mohs surgery and plastic surgery, which means cancer removal and reconstruction are performed by the same consultant in a single procedure. For ear skin cancers, this approach gives the highest cure rate while preserving as much healthy tissue and natural contour as possible.

Why Mohs for ear skin cancer

Reconstruction is tailored to the size and depth of the defect. Options include direct closure, wedge excision repair, skin grafts, local flaps, and for larger defects, multi-stage reconstructive procedures using cartilage grafts or staged flaps. Miss Nayar discusses all suitable options at consultation.

Why the ear is a common site for skin cancer

The ears catch more sun over a lifetime than almost anywhere else on the body, and the skin over the cartilage is thin. Squamous cell carcinoma is more common here than at most other sites, and skin cancers on the ear are also more likely to come back after standard excision. Both are reasons Mohs surgery is often recommended for this part of the body.

Will it affect my hearing?

Surgery on the skin of the outer ear does not affect hearing. The operation involves the skin and, where needed, the cartilage, not the ear canal or the structures inside. If a cancer sits close to the entrance of the ear canal, Miss Nayar will explain what that means for the operation before anything is decided.

Will my ear look different afterwards?

The aim of reconstruction is to keep the shape and contour of the ear. Small defects often heal with little more than a fine line. Larger repairs using grafts or staged flaps take longer to settle, and the repaired area can feel firm for some months before it softens. What is realistic for your ear depends on where the cancer sits and how deep it goes, and Miss Nayar will show you what to expect before you decide.

Glasses and hearing aids

Pressure on a healing wound is the main thing to avoid. If you wear glasses or a hearing aid on that side, mention it at consultation so the dressing and the repair can be planned around it, and you know in advance how long you might need to manage without.

Recovery

Most people are back to normal routines within a few days. Stitches usually come out within two weeks, bruising and swelling settle over the same period, and the ear should then be protected from the sun while the scar matures. Sleeping on the other side for the first week or two keeps pressure off the repair.

Book a consultation

If you are weighing up treatment for a skin cancer on the ear, a consultation covers the diagnosis, the operation and how the repair would look. Consultations are usually available within days, not weeks. Bring your referral letter or biopsy result if you have one.

I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience with my recent Mohs surgery. The surgeon was absolutely spectacular, incredibly professional, skilled and reassuring. I felt completely confident and in safe hands throughout, and the care and attention given to me were exceptional. Every member of staff was fantastic. Everyone was friendly, caring, professional and genuinely attentive, which made a potentially worrying experience feel so much easier. The reception team were also excellent, welcoming, efficient and incredibly well organised. The facilities are first class too: modern, spotless and beautifully maintained. There is plenty of parking right next to the facility, and the surrounding park seating is a lovely added touch for anyone waiting or accompanying a patient. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left, I felt that I was in the very best hands. It's clear that patient care really matters to this team. A huge thank you to the surgeon, Miss Rakhee Nayar, and the entire team for looking after me so brilliantly. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend them. Absolutely outstanding from start to finish.
