It is used for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, and it removes as little healthy tissue as possible, which matters most on the nose, eyelid, lip and ear.
Once the margins are clear, the repair begins. Depending on the site and size, that may be a direct closure, a local flap, a skin graft or, for larger defects of the nose, a forehead flap.

Consultation, surgery and follow-up all take place at Circle Cheshire Clinic in Wincham. Each step is explained before it happens, so you know what the day involves.
Years of surgical experience
Consultation: the lesion is examined, any biopsy result reviewed, and the plan for removal and repair explained, including what it will cost.
On the day, the area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you stay awake but should not feel pain.
The visible cancer is removed with a thin layer of tissue, which is mapped and examined in the laboratory on site.
While you wait, each layer is checked under the microscope. Further tissue is taken only where cancer remains.
Once the margins are clear, the wound is repaired, usually in the same visit, and follow-up is arranged at the clinic.

Is there a Manchester clinic?

Is Mohs always the right operation?
No. Mohs suits the face, ears, nose, eyelids and lips, tumours with unclear edges, cancers that have come back, and anywhere preserving tissue matters. A small, well-defined basal cell carcinoma on the back is usually treated well by standard excision, and if that is the sensible option, it is what will be recommended.
What happens at the first appointment?
The lesion is examined and your history taken. If the diagnosis is confirmed, the conversation moves to how the cancer would be removed and repaired, and where the scar would fall. You leave knowing what is proposed, the alternatives, and the cost.
Will I be awake for the surgery?
Yes. Mohs surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you stay awake and can talk to the team throughout. It also avoids the need for a general anaesthetic.
